North Carolina Septic Inspector Practice Exam

The term "operate" in the context of septic systems essentially refers to making the system function as designed. This includes ensuring that all components of the septic system are working correctly and efficiently to safely treat and dispose of wastewater.

When a septic system is operating correctly, it means that the biological processes, physical components, and hydraulic aspects are all functioning together to process sewage. This encompasses the normal day-to-day function of the system, whether that involves the movement of wastewater through pipes, the breakdown of solids in the tank, or the drainage through the leach field.

While actions like performing regular system checks, adjusting settings, or conducting emergency repairs are important in maintaining a septic system, these activities do not encapsulate the concept of "operating" the system itself. Operating fundamentally means ensuring that the system can carry out its intended function continuously and reliably under normal conditions.
